Janet Jackson confirmed her split from Wissam El Mana in May, and insiders say it was a long time coming. Jackson was married to the Qatari businessman for five years, and they share baby son Eissa, but the pop legend was unhappy.
“Janet felt like a prisoner… hidden from family and friends,” one Jackson source reveals.
Though El Mana’s considerable resources afforded her the privacy she craved, she wasn’t prepared to be a traditional Muslim wife.
“Janet felt like she couldn’t be herself anymore,” says the insider. “She couldn’t settle down and be what he wanted.”
