The September 18 Emmy Awards yielded a fifth consecutive Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series win for Julia Louis-Dreyfus. However, the Veep star capped her usual witty acceptance speech with a somber remembrance of her father, who recently died.
“I’d like to dedicate this to my father, William Louis-Dreyfus, who passed away on Friday,” Louis-Dreyfus said, her voice and hands shaking. “I’m so glad that he liked Veep, because his opinion was the one that really mattered.”
William Louis-Dreyfus was an energy industry billionaire who donated his entire collection of artwork to support children’s charities in recent years. His daughter’s speech was the first public announcement of his passing.
