Every streamer is wrestling with the same issue. It’s challenging for users to surface content that they want to watch and it’s common to hear complaints from users recounting their unsuccessful efforts to find something to watch.
Netflix is tackling that problem in part by introducing a new AI-powered “Discover” tab, which will allow users to find titles based on categories and genres.
For years, Netflix’s recommendation engine has been shaped by subscriber’s specific tastes, leaning on data such as titles subscribers add to their “My List” or give a thumbs up or down.
Currently, the streamer does offer some genre-specific suggestions in the home page horizontal modules. But those suggestions are curated by Netflix’s merchandising team, so the row names, shows and films curated within them are all highly specific to that curatorial vision. How and when they show up is when personalization comes in.
Now, AI Discover offers another way to explore.
The AI-powered “Discover” tab will show themed, curated shows and films using a new intelligence layer Netflix has been developing that responds to member feedback in real time and continues to learn from it.
