In a tearful monologue on May 1, Jimmy Kimmel revealed to a live studio audience that his newborn son, William “Billy” John Kimmel, was born with a heart defect that required open heart surgery just hours after his birth.
“Dr. Vaughn Starnes opened his chest and fixed one of the two defects in his heart. He went in there with a scalpel and did some kind of magic that I couldn’t even begin to explain,” Kimmel explained. “He opened the valve, and the operation was a success. It was the longest three hours of my life.”
Billy, who was born on April 21, is now home and is recovering well.
“He’s doing great,” Kimmel assured worried fans.
