Thanks to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which has taken social media by storm this past month, lots of attention has been paid to Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Now, “Cake Boss” baker Buddy Valastro is speaking out about his mom’s struggle with the debilitating disease.

“I’ve seen the most independent, lively person that I’ve ever met in my life – I mean, she was just like a ball of energy – reduced to not being able to do anything for herself,” Valastro told People. “And I think that’s the part that kills her the most because she was the matriarch. She did so many things for everyone.”

Valastro currently runs the Momma Mary Foundation, which is “dedicated to creating awareness about the impact caused by [ALS] and raising enough support to ultimately find a cure,” in support of his mother.
