In a shocking Survivor tribal council fraught with emotion, two-time player Zeke Smith was outed as transgender by fellow contestant Jeff Varner. The incident occurred as Varner attempted to save himself from being voted out of the tribe.
“I’m not ashamed of being trans, but I didn’t want that to be my story,” Smith, 29, said later. “I just wanted to be known for my game.”
Varner’s reckless move cost him the support of every member of his tribe, and he exited the contest without the need for the traditional secret vote.
“It’s important people see he lost that fight,” says Smith. “The message should be clear that hate will always lose.”
