Miami Marlins fans are mourning the tragic death of star pitcher José Fernández, who was killed in a boating accident in Miami Beach, Florida on September 25. He was 24 years old, and was expecting a baby with his girlfriend.
The Coast Guard discovered an overturned boat near a jetty a little after 3am on Sunday. Cuban native Fernández was among the three people killed. The Coast Guard report indicated the boat had suffered a “severe impact” with the jetty.
“He was one of our game’s great young stars…,” Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Miami Marlins organization and all of the people he touched in his life.”
