Prince’s Closest Friends Knew About His Painkiller Addiction

Since Prince was found dead in his home on April 21, speculation has been rife that an overdose of painkillers was to blame. Now, longtime friends of the iconic artist have come forward to shed light on his decade-long addiction.

Musical collaborator Sky Dangcil told Us Weekly that it all began with a hip strain that led to years upon years of chronic hip pain. “[He] took the pills to keep the show going.”

Indeed, the Purple Rain singer had a full hip replacement in 2012, though it was not a cure-all. “He was always in a lot of pain,” says hairstylist Kim Berry, who worked with Prince for years. Berry believes the addiction is indicative of Prince’s 24-7 commitment to his music and his fans.
