In a surprise to many, legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan was awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature. In addition to the ultimate recognition of his craft, Dylan will receive a nearly $1 million prize.
The Swedish Academy has not awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature to an American since Toni Morrison was chosen in 1993. Many are skeptical of Dylan’s choice, as the category typically recognizes poets and novelists, but his name has come up around the honor for years.
Most recently, Swedish Academy member Per Wastberg said of Dylan, “He is probably the greatest living poet.”
