Ed Sheeran has come clean about a secret struggle with substance abuse.
In an interview taping for The Jonathan Ross Show, airing on October 21, the singer-songwriter explained how he knew he needed to step back from the spotlight and get healthy.
“I didn’t really have any growing up time into getting famous,” Sheeran explained. “All the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse.”
Sheeran, 26, credits focusing on work with helping to overcome his weaknesses.
“I can’t write songs under the influence, I can’t perform under the influence so the more I worked the less [that happened],” he explained.
